Candida's Affect On Pregnancy By TheWebReviewer
Yeast infections during pregnancy are more common that most women realize. While a pregnant woman may be surprised when she begins to experience symptoms of a yeast infection, research has shown that pregnancy—especially the 2nd trimester—often creates a breeding ground for Candida yeast problems within a woman’s body.
To recognize the connection between yeast infections and pregnancy, it is helpful to first understand candida—the thing causing yeast infections. Candida is actually a healthy bacteria that is typically beneficial to the body, serving a purpose to create a balanced intestinal flora. But when the conditions are just right, the bacteria can overgrow, developing into a fungal infection, which affects moist areas in the body, such as the vagina.
The right conditions for a candida overgrowth problem include people with weak immune systems and people taking antibiotics. The issue with antibiotics is that along with killing the bad stuff, they kill the good bacteria as well. When the good bacteria is destroyed, candida yeast can grow out of control. So a pregnant woman who has had to take antibiotics may be at an increased risk for yeast infections.
However, the most common reason pregnant women are more susceptible to yeast infection is due to drastic increase in hormones the woman experiences. This hormonal change can affect the vaginal PH, leading to an unhealthy environment that encourages growth of bacteria—specifically candida.
Another contributor to the yeast problem is the tendency for some women to crave and indulge in high-sugar or yeasty foods during pregnancy. These foods actually feed the bacteria problem and can make the situation worse.
While doctors may prescribe medications and creams for yeast infection cures, some pregnant women prefer not to take medications during

their pregnancy. In such situations, there are some natural, home remedy type treatments to try in order to eliminate the irritating yeast infection symptoms:
--Consuming plain, sugar-free yogurt is a good way to build up the healthy bacteria in the system. --Applying plain, sugar-free yogurt inside the vagina is a way to experience immediate, cooling relief of symptoms and also fights the bad bacteria present there. --Inserting a peeled garlic clove (attached to a long piece of thread) into the vagina can also help to fight unhealthy bacteria. --Utilizing good nutrition—low sugar, high veggie, whole grains and protein--can keep the bacteria at bay, rather than feeding it. --Taking a probiotic supplement is also a way to support the healthy bacteria in your system.
As always, it is best to check with your medical professional before trying any remedies at home. However, by being proactive and taking the right steps, it is possible for a pregnant woman to defeat yeast infections and enjoy a healthy pregnancy to the fullest.
