Diabetes During Pregnancy - A Curse For The Unborn And The Mother
By Apurvashree

Diabetes during pregnancy is one of the most common problems faced by women and is caused due the abnormally increased hormones that are released from the placenta. This is a symptom, which occurs in most women in the second or the third trimester of pregnancy, however, like other problems it also vanishes after the delivery.

Throughout your pregnancy, you should try to keep your blood sugar level under control, by checking your insulin level at regular intervals and if required, alter your diet pattern to bring the sugar level within the normal range. Home glucose testing kits are also available in drug stores that can help in keeping a regular check on your blood sugar level. Consult your doctor to know the exact level of blood sugar that falls within the normal range.

Causes Of Diabetes During Pregnancy

The reason for the development of diabetes during pregnancy is insufficient production of insulin in the mother’s body, as insulin is responsible for breaking down the sugar and release of energy. If the insulin level in the body decreases, the sugar level in the body rises, which can cause health problems as the high blood sugar are passed to the baby from the mother’s body through placenta.

What Are The Major Symptoms Of Diabetes During Pregnancy?

The symptoms of diabetes are generally not prevalent in most of the pregnant women; however, if they do occur, they show signs like fatigue, nausea, blurred vision, vomiting, and frequent urination.

Treatment of diabetes during pregnancy is very important, as if untreated it may result in the risk of high blood pressure and C-section

during childbirth. Moreover, it may also create some complications for the infant like, the baby might grow abnormally large, may also result in jaundice right after birth, adult childhood obesity, and in some cases, respiratory problems. A baby born to mother with diabetes has a higher risk of developing Type II diabetes, which is the most common form of adult diabetes.

This problem can be treated with a little care and planning. Proper and nutritious diet plays a very important role in treating diabetes during pregnancy. The food of pregnant woman should be high in nutrition, especially Iron, and low in fat. Intake of caffeine should be reduced to minimum during pregnancy.

Pregnant women should also follow a regular exercise routine, like walking, swimming, or cycling, as it helps in keeping the blood sugar level under control. If these do not help, then you should consult a doctor immediately and seek proper medication to bring the insulin level under control.
