Health Insurance And Infertility Treatment
By Carol Andrews

Many treatment clinics and facilities accept major health insurance plans, which can help you pay for your treatment considerably. Coverage for infertlity treatment is not actually determined by the insurance company- it's determined by the insurance policy that you hold. Health insurance is typically selected by your employer. Some insurance policies might cover diagnostic testing, while others might not cover any treatment or testing. Some insurance policies will cover treatment 100%!

To find out whether or not your health insurance will cover treatment, is to call your insurance company and ask. Verbal acknowledgement is not a guarantee of coverage however, so you should request a list of covered benefits pertaining to your treatment in writing. If you don't have one already, ask for the insurance policy booklet that you can look up your coverage for each type of treatment (as well as other medical services).

Sometimes health insurance policies will cover treatment, but will charge higher co-payments than what you pay for other health services. You will also want to verify your prescription benefits for treatment drugs, as many doctors will want to prescribe them.

Before undergoing any treatment, you may wish to get

a predetermination of benefits. This is a document that shows what the insurance will cover and what you are expected to pay- and that way you won't have any surprises after the treatment has been completed. If your claim is denied, you can ask to see the portion of the contract that shows your treatment is excluded from coverage. If the insurance company doesn't have an exact reason- you will have a stronger case if you decide to fight for coverage for treatment.
